JJ Rocks Article # 125: From Italy: Antonella Mazza

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes there are rare moments in time when talent and beauty go hand in hand like two skaters dancing across a frozen lake through a winter’s mist. And when both elements radiate from the same person there should be special attention given to such a gifted individual. So I want you all to take a few moments and focus on an incredible, beautiful bassist from Italy named Antonella Mazza.

As I listen to Antonella perform I find my self going from one track to another as I’m being captured by the many moods of her exquisite and tasteful bass playing. At one time I’m engulfed by her deep growling upright bass patterns that have a voice and tone that sets me back in my chair imagining being in the front row of one of her jazz concerts in amazement. And as I’m taken away by her superb phrasing and harmonic explorations, I dream what it would be like to stand next to her and play my guitar on one of my favorite jazz pieces.

There is a certain security that someone who is taking a solo looks for in a bass player. And that is knowing that they can depend on a nice bed of inventive chord and arpeggio voicings along with creative rhythmic ideas that allow their solos to shine like a new penny. Not only does Antonella fill those shoes, but she also grabs and holds your attention with her own tasteful solos!

But then I’m also drawn to another side of her playing while she lays down endless tight grooves on her electric bass. Now this puts me in a totally different kind of mood! With hints of Jaco in her approach, she nails it to the wall so tight that she must have drummers lined up just wanting to play behind her. And even though Antonella is playing an electric bass, it doesn’t mean that she can’t be smooth and mellow like on her upright. I heard a balled where she played a solid body and it was as sweet as fresh summer honey.

Here is a bio that Antonella sent to me for her article. We usually don’t print bios but she is a very astonishing player and I think that our readers would like to read about some of her accomplishments.
