Recently, I was given a CD by the band Harakiri. The back story - the founder of the band, Jordan Manus, attended our local High School with our son. I first met Jordan when his three piece band played a talent show at the schools auditorium. They just vamped on a surf theme but you could tell he just discovered what he wanted to do with his life. That is an awesome thing to witness. We should all be so fortunate. Now Jordan is attending the McNally Smith School of Music in St Paul MN. He has toured with his former band, City Of The Weak on the Vans Warped tour and launched this latest project, Harakiri. I have to say, I was a little apprehensive when I first started to listen because my radio hat was still on. Once I got past that, I was impressed by the quality of the songwriting. No formulas, no trying to write a hit, just wonderful instrumental parts coupled with insightful lyrics and the sincere effort to produce something from the heart. Now I look back at the memory of that awkward eighth grader taking his first musical steps and sense some kind fulfillment knowing that Jordan's journey is starting to expand to a whole new level. Harakiri contains a little jazz, a little blues and some whimsy but it's all very inventive and fresh.
