I have often said I was born in the wrong era, 150 years too late. I'm more comfortable alone in the mountains than I am around civilization. Much of my love for the wilderness I inherited from my father, along with a large amount of his old Mountain Man era reenactment buckskins and clothing. When I was a younger man I spend a good amount of time attending Mountain Man rendezvous and studying those old ways. I came up with this story song back then and at the time the only name I could think of for the character was Old Bill, it stuck so I never changed it. Some years after I wrote this I sang it for my dad. As the story progressed he got a funny look on his face. When I was finished he said, "I didn't think I ever told anyone about that." I said "what do you mean? I wrote this off the top of my head." He than recanted to me how years before he had had almost the exact same experience I told in my story.... Did I mention my dads name is Bill?
