"Cross The Border" (Jim Duckett)

Well we moved to Virginia in the winter
Wantin' to be closer to home
And we found us a place just north of Richmond
Where the railroad would run every morn
Yes we got us a garden in the ground
With a little help from our friends
My boy had come out from California
It sure was good to see him again
And you could cross over the border in a mornin'
Just as easy as "how do you do"
And you could get back to town in the evenin'
As long as the train could get through

Well there wasn't a hint of any trouble
With our neighbors to the north
But the papers said this must be done
If we are gonna prove our worth
We believed the things that they all said
Because, after all, it must be true
All those blue-belly big city bankers
Are comin' to get me and you
But you could still cross the border in a mornin'
Just as easy as "how do you do"
And you could get back to town in the evenin'
As long as the train could get through

Well it wasn't like the way they all made out
It wasn't easy, and it wasn't fun
For four long years, I carried family tears
With my dirty clothes and a clean gun
I don't know what's happened to my people
I only hope that they made it through
All those blue-bellied big city bankers
Well they finally got to me and to you.
Now I can't cross the border in a mornin'
Just as easy as "how do you do"
I have to sneak back to town in the evenin'
And pray that the train can get through
And pray that the train can get through
