We plied muddy waters to no avail
The mighty Mississippi had come to a halt
Where once mighty currents did flow
We had to find our way through stagnant pools

Our entire economy has come to a halt
When hard working people can't afford a home
When criminals are rewarded for taking away the jobs
And businesses that support a family
And now we spend more money for prisons than education
And the prisons are concentration camps for the poor

Well, in the drought that's drying up the mighty Mississippi
The central artery through which all commerce flows
The rich steal from the poor
And I'm a modern-day Robin Hood

Well, they take our taxes and our retirement investments
And let private business use them for speculation
And when they lose our money
We bail them out again

Our entire economy has come to a halt
When hard working people can't afford a home
When criminals are rewarded for taking away the jobs
And businesses that support a family
And now we spend more money for prisons than education
And the prisons are concentration camps for the poor

Well, in the drought that's drying up the mighty Mississippi
The central artery through which all commerce flows
The rich steal from the poor
And I'm a modern-day Robin Hood
Yes, I'm a modern-day Robin Hood
