Chasing the Gold

West to California in 1852
Gonna strike it rich with an axe and my mule
Got myself a claim back up in the hills
Anything is better than slaving in the mills

Chasing the gold, chasing the gold
Chasing the gold, chasing the gold

Working flat 18 hours a day
Down in the mine trying to make it pay
She don't offer nothing, don't seem right
People gettin rich around me overnight

So many of the miners never made a dime
Hammering away in some cold and dusty mine
Some went home defeated, some of us just died
From a claim jumpers bullet or collapsing of the mine

Everyone got greedy, the same is true today
Racketeers and financiers always get their way
Buying politicians with the cash they've made
And screw the 99% for getting in the way
