Kenya SoulSinger: Soul music has always been a very powerful part of my essence. I distinctly remember myself at
2 years old, plopping down in front of our floor model TV, giddy to my core knowing that Gladys Knight and the
Pips would soon take the stage. The music excited me, moved me, inspired me, and over the years, seduced me into
its captivating has undeniably been a part of the village that raised this child.
I thank God for my parents who took me to church where I received a hardy dose of "the good news" otherwise
known as gospel music. I also admire and bless them for allowing my brother and I to experience other genres of
music, from jazz to rap, pop, rock, and of course my dear friend, R & B.
If R & B wasn't playing on my boom box, I could always enjoy the somewhat muzzled sound through the wall that
divided me and my musical twin (big bro) my home, there was ALWAYS a beat, a bass line, a melody to be
So many played vital roles in my musical journey; from church musicians, to incomparable music and band teachers
who taught me to love music and to respect its power. Perhaps the largest role was my 6 years with gospel recording
artists' Set Aside. I was 1/3 of this powerhouse group whose harmonies and intonations were compared to the
renowned Clark Sisters and my "aunties in my head", The Emotions. I am thankful for the experience that led us all
over the country, winning awards and sharing the stage with many gospel greats. More importantly, the group
cultivated dedication, passion, high expectations, perseverance and quality. I took a lot from the journey and
wouldn't change a moment.
In January 2007, Set Aside left the stage for the last time as a trio. For many months afterwards I only sang in the
shower. Winter 2009 I had an awakening...nothing deep...just an irresistible urge that led me to my keyboard where I
began to play a few chords and like a river, the lyrics to my first single began to flow. The music that had for so long
been a source of my vitality poured out and in 10 short minutes "Beautiful" was written. The desire to record quickly
followed. I have since released my second single, "Rollacoasta" (an album fave). On August 13, 2011 I will present
"Groovy Way", my first solo album in which I am honored and proud to share with you.
Life experiences, girl talk, my very vivid dreams and resplendent imagination have joined forces and have
assembled a 12 track album destined to please a wide demographic of listeners. From start to finish, "Groovy Way"
will endow its audience with grown and sexy lyrics, laced with bass laden funky grooves that will provoke the ear
and soul to take a deeper listen. I am proud to have made music that you can ride to, vibe to, laugh and cry to, make
love to, make babies know...Soul Music~
My brief journey within this genre has afforded opportunities for me to open for artists' whom I hold in high esteem,
including Jeffry Osborne, Howard Hewitt, Mint Condition, Kem, The Whispers, Silk, Lyfe Jennings, Ke Ke Wyatt, Kandi Burruss and Bobby
Valentino, to name a few.
I am grateful for the movement and anticipate sharing the same vibe and space.
From my heart,
Kenya SoulSinger
