Just about everything

Eric Butterfield is a songwriter based in Sonoma County, California, recording under the name Sons of the Golden West. He explores indie rock, singer/songwriter, and Americana. His West Coast roots run deep, being a fourth-generation Californian who grew up in Los Angeles absorbing the heritage of a rapidly altered landscape. His family's westward migration and the idea of a place losing its history inform a lot of what is Sons of the Golden West.
Travel and relocation have informed much of Eric’s sound. Living in Denver, Colorado, in the 1990s turned him on to the vibrant Americana music scene there, though he played in a pop punk band.
Eric also spent time in Dublin, Ireland, where he indulged himself in noisy power pop while playing in The Mexican Pets, which went on to tour Europe and play with the likes of Pavement, Fugazi and Sebadoh.
Eric's songs have appeared on more than three dozen TV shows, including NBC ("Last Call with Carson Daly"), MTV ("Teen Mom," "True Life," and "16 & Pregnant"), Bravo ("Flipping Out"), Animal Planet, TLC ("NY Ink" and "Surprise Homecomings"), Starz Studios, Discovery Channel ("Auction Kings") and an online video narrated by Ashley Judd, "Help Save Idaho's Wolves" (
