Magik Squirrel has a sound that is hard to place and even harder to forget. The songs do not always have traditional structure or compositions yet, remain familiar as it seems 40 years of rock have been put into a blender and poured through your ears. Finalists in the ReverbNation Break Out Band Contest for New England- Worcester September 8, 2014, within a month of placing the band's demos online, the Magik began. Part of it is due to Magik Squirrel himself: Ric Oliveira, a legend in the news business of Massachusetts, who inexplicably began writing music in 2013.
"It is pure luck," said Ric. "Once I released "Taste" online just for some friends, it began trending on Reverb and all of a sudden, good things started happening."
In 2015, Magik Squirrel was named one of the Beantown 9 in the Hard Rock Rising contest. Judge Robin Lane, an Alternative Rock legend gushed about his songs and energy on stage. Heavy Metal Rocker Lizzy Borden also called his performance "exciting" "I get it... you rock," she said in her review. Both judges said the music has a Velvet Underground touch to it and the songs were "great."
A BMI artist, Magik Squirrel's debut Album, Dangerous Mary came out in 2015. He is currently working on his second album while continuing a decade of work with youth musicians and artists, having been responsible for giving dozens of young artists in the SouthCoast of Massachusetts a stage to perform on in festivals, concerts and charity programs. A local talk radio station general manager, former Pulitzer prize nominated investigative reporter, he was the first American to interview and cover Radiohead in their silent debut in America.
"I always had an ear for music," said Magik Squirrel. "Now I'm trying to find a place in Rock's tree."
