Bio

Voodoo Jazz formed in the late 1990s. Our music is a mix of funk, soul, and jazz. Before going on an extended hiatus we had the opportunity to play hundreds of shows as well as many notable jazz festival appearances in Montréal (Festival International de Jazz de Montréal), Ottawa (Ottawa Jazz Fest), Toronto ( JVC Jazz Festival) Rimouski (Festijazz Rimouski) and Lyon, France (Entretiens Jacques-Cartiers). In the mid 2000s the group took a break, but has reformed and been playing together since 2011. We have recently produced our third full length album, Resurrection which was released this November.

Voodoo Jazz is Joseph Hackl on guitar and vocals, Jesse Meyer on alto and tenor saxophones, Alex Daneau on tenor and baritone saxophones, Philip Chown on bass, and Christian Ingelevics on drums. We count among our members graduates from the prestigious music schools at McGill University and Humber College, and have decades of combined musical experience.

"Voodoo Jazz started out as a group of kids making music that moved us. But as often happens, life took people in other directions. For me and Alex though, the core desire to make our music remained. Sometimes you're lucky enough to meet people whose passions align with your own, and despite distance and distractions, the work you do together is always surprising and fulfilling. This record is the result of that chemistry mixed with the passion of our new members. Here we are, after a lot of hard work, excited and hopeful for the future. Thank you for joining us on the adventure."
